Constraints on Cosmological Parameters from Maxima-1

چکیده
We set new constraints on a seven-dimensional space of cosmological parameters within the class of inflationary adiabatic models. We use the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background measured over a wide range of ` in the first flight of the MAXIMA balloon-borne experiment (MAXIMA-1) and the low ` results from COBE/DMR. We find constraints on the total energy density of the universe, Ω = 1.0+0.15 −0.30, the physical density of baryons, Ωbh = 0.03±0.01, the physical density of cold dark matter, Ωcdmh = 0.2+0.2 −0.1, and the spectral index of primordial scalar fluctuations, ns = 1.08±0.1, all at the 95% confidence level. By combining our results with measurements of high-redshift supernovae we constrain the value of the cosmological constant and the fractional amount of pressureless matter in the universe to 0.45 < ΩΛ < 0.75 and 0.25 < Ωm < 0.50, at the 95% confidence level. Our results are consistent with a flat universe and the shape parameter deduced from large scale structure, and in marginal agreement with the baryon density from big bang nucleosynthesis. Cosmology from Cosmic Microwave Background and Galaxy Clusters
We present the results of analysis of constraints on cosmological parameters from cosmic microwave background (CMB) alone and in combination with galaxy cluster baryon fraction assuming inflation–generated adiabatic scalar fluctuations. The CMB constraints are obtained using our likelihood approximation method (Bartlett et al., 2000, Douspis et al., 2001). In the present analysis we use the new...

متن کاملQuintessence Models and the Cosmological Evolution of α .
The cosmological evolution of a quintessence-like scalar field φ coupled to matter and gauge fields leads to effective modifications of the coupling constants and particle masses over time. We analyze a class of models where the scalar field potential V (φ) and the couplings to matter B(φ) admit common extremum in φ, as in the Damour-Polyakov ansatz. We find that even for the simplest choices o...
متن کاملCosmological Implications of the Maxima-i High Resolution Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy Measurement
We discuss the cosmological implications of the new constraints on the power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy derived from a new high resolution analysis of the MAXIMA-I measurement (Lee et al. 2001). The power spectrum shows excess power at l∼ 860 over the average level of power at 411≤ l≤ 785. This excess is statistically significant on the ∼ 95% confidence level. Such a...
متن کاملImplications of the BOOMERANG and MAXIMA-I results for the Baryon Mass Fraction in Clusters of galaxies
Recent BOOMERANG and MAXIMA-I analyses of the angular power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background put more stringent constraints on the cosmological parameters. I show that these constraints are consistent with the observed baryon budget in clusters of galaxies, allowing any further contribution to this budget from baryons not in stars and not X-ray emitting to be less than 14 per cent at...
